Destruction and Recovery of Reef Systems, Reef and Man
along the Texas coast, about 40 such platforms are conserved (Hastings
1976; Mc Intosh 1981). Many artificial reefs have been constructed by clubs
and associations of amateur fishermen from tires, old sunken ships, and
gross remains of the construction industry. For their construction specially
built concrete blocks were used (Woodhead et al. 1982). The catch in the
vicinity of artificial reefs increases by up to one order sometimes. Amateur
fishery along the USA coasts is now based mainly on the artificial reefs.
Based on the number of these fishermen, running to several million, the
total profit obtained by the USA from the use of artificial reefs was
estimated at around 85 million dollars. A special company has recently been
installed to work in this field: the "Artificial Reef Corporation". The center
of development of artificial reefs is in Washington, and edits the bulletin
Reef briefs. Its goal is to stimulate and act as consultant for artificial reef
construction.
Artificial reefs are also constructed by the Japanese, who think that
building them could be profitable even in the vicinity of natural reefs
(Ogawa 1973; Stone et al. 1979; Nakamura 1985), however, an opposing
point of view also exists (Munro and Williams 1985). The latter authors,
summarizing the results of a special symposium, have concluded that the
reliability of their construction in natural reef areas has still not been
proved.
