Annuallly, approximately 1 million m 3 of sludge are dumped into the Clyde River
from Glasgow, Scotland, at a depth of 80 m. Affected by this are approximately
10 km 2 of Irish Sea bottom which have been made uninhabitable for the Norway
lobster (Nephrops norvegicus). It is estimated that the fishing industry is losing an
annual income of £ 75,000 because of this. On the other hand, additional effects on
fish counts have been insignificant. The effects on phytoplankton are approximately
like those of other areas close to the coast; the production of plankton in affected
