Habitat and Ecology
Inhabits clear water hill streams and large rivers
with gravelly substratum. It is a benthopelagic
bottom feeder.
Conservation Status
IUCN Red List, least concern.
Threats
It is locally threatened by destructive fi shing
techniques such as dynamite fi shing, overexploitation, loss of habitat and siltation.

Of no fi shery interest.

Snout and lower jaw with tubercles; barbels
two short pairs, rostral pair often absent; dorsal fi n
inserted entirely in advance of anal fi n. Body silvery with 8–12 vertical bands; scales with many
radii, lateral line complete with double black spot.
Sexual Dimorphism: Male large and robust with
paired fi ns enlarged and fan-like, outer few rays of
pectorals strongly thickened and ossifi ed, dorsal
and anal fi ns well expanded; snout, lower jaw and
outer branchiostegal rays covered by thorny tubercles, body roughened due to presence of tubercles,
bands faded and dorsal fi n margin grey-edged.
Female normal without above modifi cations.

Division: Almora, Nainital and Pithoragarh districts.

Throughout except Kerala. Karnataka (CedawatiVedawati stream, headwaters of Krishna river
