Acknow ledgments
This book was developed over a three-year period
through a collaborative effort involving numerous
federal agency, nongovernment organizations, and
university personnel. The original idea and primary
funding for this book was provided by the USDA,
Forest Service, Washington Office, Ecosystem
Management Staff Group, and the USDA, Forest
Service Interregional Ecosystem Management Coordination Group. In particular, we wish to acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Christopher Risbrudt
in identifying the purpose and need for the book
and organizing funding for its completion. Additional funding was provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and
Development.
An editorial board assisted the two senior editors in (1) developing initial section and chapter
outlines; (2) identifying, contacting, and finalizing
chapter content with authors; (3) directing the
anonymous peer review process; and (4) assisting
the authors with chapter revisions. Members of this
board included Dr. J. Michael Vasievich (USDA
Forest Service, North Central Station), Dr. Richard
Everett (USDA Forest Service, retired), Gene
Lessard (USDA Forest Service, retired), Dr. Russell Graham (USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station), and Dr. Bennett A. Brown
(Animas Foundation). Additional technical assistance to the editorial board was provided by Dr.
James Andreasen (U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, Office of Research and Development), Iris
Goodman (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
Office of Research and Development), Dr. John E.
Estes (University of California at Santa Barbara),
Dr. John Lehmkuhl (USDA Forest Service, Pacific
Northwest Research Station), and Dr. Roland Redmond (University of Montana).
Primary work on the book began in May of 1997
with a weeklong workshop held in Denver, Colorado. At that time, most authors made presentations of the topics covered in each chapter. Discussion among editorial board members and
authors resulted in final chapter outlines. Anonymous peer review of draft manuscripts included
both a scientific review of the technical content and
a management review of application appropriateness. Chapters were revised by the authors based
on input from reviewers' comments. Dawn Wiser
(USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research
Station) and Melissa Hart (University of Montana)
performed technical editing of the manuscripts.
Judy Tripp (USDA Forest Service, Northern Region) made final modifications to the chapters to
follow publisher specifications, and provided general administrative assistance during the development of the book.
To all previously named individuals we extend
our gratitude and appreciation for their assistance
in developing this book. Additionally, we wish to
acknowledge the collaborative effort between the
senior editors in completing this book. Authorship
for this book does not imply that one senior contributed more than the other; both contributed
equally. Instead, the authorship of this book represents the fact that Patrick S. Bourgeron lost the coin
toss.
