The Tectonic and Geological Environment of Coastal South America

ing ocean circulation patterns and perhaps the world's climate, and uplifted the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. The coastal range (Serrania de
Baudo) was accreted to the South American continental margin.
In mid-Miocene time most of the present Central and North Andes
developed (e.g., Kroonenberg et al. 1990; Hoorn et al. 1995). Late Miocene
deposits in the Magdalena Valley between the Eastern and Central Cordilleras of Colombia demonstrate a Late Miocene age for the Magdalena River
(Dengo and Covey 1993). The paleo-Magdalena, and its principal tributary,
the paleo-Cauca, both developed in tectonic lows as the Eastern and Central Cordilleras were uplifted, interrupting and severing the earlier foreland basin. This Mid-Miocene event completely disrupted earlier westward
and northwestward drainage from the Guyana and Brazilian Shields. North
of Colombia, sediments eroded from the uplifted Central and Eastern Cordilleras were deposited in the Cauca and Magdalena fans.
