Columbia, Canada (south coastal).
Data Sources and Methods
This comparative study focuses on 12 Araucanian lakes (hereafter called
"Chilean" lakes) and on 8 south coastal BC lakes (hereafter called "BC"
lakes) (Great Central, Henderson , Hobiton , Kennedy , Long, Nimpkish,
Sproat , and Woss). The review of Chilean lakes is largely based on
previous publications (Campos , 1984; Campos , Arenas, lara, Gonser, &
Prins, 1984; Campos, Steffen , Aguero , Parra, Zuniga, 1988; Campos,
Steffen , Aguero , Parr a, Zuniga , 1990; Montecino , 1991; Soto & Zuniga ,
1991; Soto, Campos, Steffen , Parra, & Zuniga , 1993); and unpublished
data from Llanquihue and Yelcho lakes (D. Soto). Data from Be lakes
are from Stockner (1981, 1987) , Stockner and Costella (1980), Stockner
and Shortreed (1985), Shortreed and Stockner (1986, 1990). Some BC
lakes were experimentally fertilized for enhancem ent of sockeye salmon
(Oncorhynchus nerka) production (Stockner , 1987), but data used in this
study are from "untreated" stations and/or lakes.
