number at specific sites proceeding southward from the Valdivian rainforest into the north Patagonian forests; and 3) the dynamics of the smallmammal assemblages at the southern temperate forest/Patagonian steppe
interface, and the northern margin of temperate evergreen forests in
Chile. The relevance of these data to the current status of temperate
rainforests and their biota in Chile will also be considered.
Results
Table 10.1 presents the results of tabulations of numbers of amphibians
and reptiles for selected collecting localities in southern Chile and the
Pacific Northwest. Sites in the Pacific Northwest support more herptiles
overall than southern Chile (19-32 species versus 13-18 species, respectively) for all but the most polarward sites. The total number of species
present in the regions is 45 and 38 species, for Pacific Northwest and
Chilean temperate rainforests respectively. Whereas salamanders make
up a majority of Pacific Northwest amphibians (18/26 species, or 69.2%),
