likely to have a significant ecological impact at ecotones which are mainly
controlled by low temperatures. Similarly, ecotones mainly controlled by
moisture availability (i.e., at their eastern and equatorward limits) are
likely to be greatly affected by changes in fire regimes which will inevitably
accompany global warming . Given the relatively minor role of natural
fires over most of the distribution of temperate rainforests, climatically
induced increases in fire occurrence are likely to have major influences on
the structure, composition, and functioning of these ecosystems.
Acknowledgments. Support for the research on which this review is based
was provided by the Council on Research and Creative Work of the
University of Colorado , the National Geographic Society, the USDA
Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, the Ecological Processes Program, and the National Science Foundation. Some of the
material on South America was drawn from collaborative work in progress
with Thomas Kitzberger, Alan Rebertus, and Ricardo Villalba, whose
contributions are gratefully acknowledged. The manuscript was considerably improved by comments of the reviewers K.P. Lertzman and T.A.
Spies.
