detritus. Mysids are generally mixed feeders and
in coastal areas utilize organic detritus to a considerable extent as a food source (Mauchline
1980). It is possible, therefore, that in the
Stagnone, where a large amount of unconsumed
organic matter is deposited on the bottom
(Pusceddu 1999), mysids mobilize the organic
particles, being involved in a short food chain:
organic detritus - mysid-fish (Vaccaro 1998).

Animal Biology and Marine Ecology, University of Messina,
and Prof. Antonio Ariani (Department of Zoology,
University of Naples) for their collaboration in taxonomic
identification.
