5 Spatial and Temporal DI,tnblltion Patterns
Temporal and spatial distributions of nutrients, algae and zooplankton were
analysed on different time scales in several sub-projects of ELA W AT. On the
small-scale, single tidal cycles were investigated. These results can give information about the source of the species and their fate in the Wadden Sea. On the large
scale, the seasonal developments of the parameter mentioned above were analysed.

Material and Methods
The studies were carried out in the backbarrier system of the island of Spiekeroog,
southern North Sea (Chap. 3.1). Sampling sites and temporal resolutions were
chosen by the sub-projects according to their specific research questions (Table
5.1.1). Detailed descriptions on the analysis of nutrients are found in Grasshoff et
al. (1983) and Niesel (1997). Phytoplankton analysis was done after Utermohl
(1958), details are given in Niesel (1997). The analysis of zooplankton is described
in Gunther et al. (1998). Microphytobenthos was sampled regularly once a month,
in 1994 and 1995 from April to September, in 1996 from February to September,
at different sample sites in the backbarrier tidal flats of Spiekeroog. Dead and
living cells were analysed for the qualitative comparison between algae in the
sediment and in the water body.
Table 5.1.1 Measured parameter with time and site of the sampling. The precise sampling sites
are given in Chap. 3.1 and in Gehm (1996), GUnther (1998) and Niesel (1997). WP = sampling
site in the OtzlImer Balje, see Fig. 3.1.2.
