So, if small fi shing is given a chance and
helped to integrate into the regional economy, a
benefi cial effect on the preservation of marine
ecosystems will be seen (Tempier 1986 ). Because
it is based on management areas, the new righteousness (i.e.: ecological and scientifi c probity)
of the rules of exploitation by fi sheries is a signifi cant issue in our regional economies. Finally,
the original experience of fi sheries management
that embodies the prud’homie is included in
highly topical debates led by scientists and policy
makers at an international level.

Conclusion
Decision-making prud’homies are at the intersection of formal law, regional performance, the
authority of local administrative structures, economic pressures, recent scientifi c achievements,
and common sense born of professional experience who can manage the natural resources in
which they live, outside the rules established by
distant jurists (Féral 1987 ).
Such social structures, born of continuous
adaptation to the surrounding environment, also
exist in other countries. Japan has a long history
of harmonious relationships, via traditional cooperatives, between human communities and the
natural environments in which they live.
