Glossary
303
rod TLC: thin-layer chromatography performed on a Chromarod.
stenothermic: organisms that dwell within a narrow temperature range.
surfactant: any compound that reduces surface tension when dissolved in water
or water solutions or that reduces interfacial tension between two liquids or
between a liquid and a solid.
track autoradiography: visualization of incorporated radioactivity (e.g., 14C in
microscopic algae) through mounting in a photographic emulsion, followed by
development and counting of "tracks" of adjacent silver grains, each track
denoting emission of a nuclear particle.
trophic marker: chemical compound characteristic of an organism that can be
used to trace predator-prey relationships.
