glacial lake: lake fonned by the repeated scouring of the earth's surface during
the advancing and receding of glaciers.
gravimetry: detennining the amount of a substance from its weight.
growth refuge: condition or process used by some species of fish, particularly in
their first year of life, to maximize growth rate or body size to minimize the risk
of predation. High growth rates thus provide a refuge from predation.
habitat constriction: ecological tenn describing a situation in which species are
forced, primarily by physicochemical factors, to be constricted or squeezed into
a narrow zone of the water column during certain times of the year. For example, low dissolved oxygen in the lower parts of the water column and high
temperatures in the upper areas of the water column can cause some fish to be
constricted into a narrow band within the middle parts of the water column,
where oxygen and temperature conditions are more favorable.
holometabolous: in insects, development with complete metamorphosis (i.e.,
egg, larva, pupa, adult).
homeostatic capacity: ability of an organism to control or regulate certain critical
biological functions or processes within set biochemical and physiological
boundaries for that species. If homeostatic boundaries or physiological tolerance limits are exceeded, then the organism becomes increasingly vulnerable to
mortality from various sources of environmental stress.
Iatroscan: instrument used for scanning Chromarods through a flame ionization
detector.
instar: interval between successive molts of exoskeletons in arthropods. In organisms with an exoskeleton, molting is required for the animal to be able to
increase in size.
lamella: thin aqueous film that provides the structure of a foam at its plateau
borders.
lipase: enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of lipids.
lipid normalization: concentration in a compartment, organism, or tissue,
divided by the fractional weight of lipid of that organism or tissue.
lipophilicity: lipid-like character of a contaminant. It is generally related to the
octanol-water partition coefficient of the compound.
lipolytic enzymes: lipases and esterases that hydrolyze ester bonds in lipids.
