R. FISCHER
Invariant stimulus configuration. Refers, in biology, to the invariant features of
the stimulus. Invariant means, in physics, the unchangeability of a magnitude or
formula when transposed from one into another system of coordinates; the charge
of electron, e, PLANCK'S quantum, h, and velocity of light, c, are such invariants.
The invariants of perception are what the man on the street calls "real things".
Information. The irreflexive imprinting of structure on structure and the ability
to discriminate a just noticeable difference (FISCHER, 1967).
"Less space-like and more time-like". In physical, Euclidean space-time, we are
aware of three dimensions. 5ensory, especially visual, space-time is experienced
within two-dimensional imagery. Cerebral space-time has no spatial characteristics;
it is experienced as time.
Psychotomimetic drugs. Drugs which are also referred to as phantastica, psychotica, hallucinogens, psychodysleptics and psychoanaleptics, and which produce "a
flight of the soul from the body" or ekstasis in Greek. In general, these drugs
accentuate the already existing personality; visionaries become more visionary;
bores become more boring.
Weber Ratio, specifically in gustation, is a dimensionless-or signal per noiseratio Ll 5/5, where Ll 5 denotes the concentration difference between the lower and
upper limits of a just noticeable difference [jnd] in taste and 5 denotes the lower
limit.
Discussion
BREMERMANN:
The "flower children" are having difficulties in obtaining LSD. Could they
use the motor immobilization that you described to have a "trip".
FISCHER:
Yes, motor immobilization under condition of normal visual input results in
hallucinations. Apparently the age-old Yoga practices are also based on this
principle.
BREMERMANN:
Is the experience induced by the drug popularly called "STP" which recently
appeared in the San Francisco Bay Area, comparable to the LSD experiences?
FISCHER:
I think it is the same type of experience but extended for 72 hrs.
BREMERMANN:
In one of the papers published in "Science", it was claimed that the LSD dose
that was given to rats was proportional to one average dose taken by LSD
users; I do not recall whether this was a paper about chromosomal breaks or
another paper about malformed and still-born young that resulted from LSD
injection in early pregnancy.
FISCHER:
The results of both types of papers to which you are referring could not be
reproduced (see among other papers, e.g. Science 159, 731 (1968) and 160,
1343 (1968).
MEYER-DORING:
In the state of maximum concentration of the Yoga are there found S-waves
in great number and are their spikes very high? Is the number of c¥ and f3
waves diminished and also the height of their amplitudes?
