GRAINGER:
(1) CO 2 production was measured in the yeast experiments but not in the
others. Some O 2 may have been used by non-respiratory reactions but the
amount is not likely to be large. - (2) This ratio was not determined. I do
not know what effect uncoupling ATP would have on the heat productionj02
consumption ratio.
SMITH:
In comparisons of direct calorimetry with oxidative exchange it IS most
important to establish steady states and states of material balances.
GRAINGER:
I quite agree. Tests showed that the steady state was approached in these
experiments. It must also be remembered that conditions inside the calorimeter are rather unnatural and different from the conditions in the Warburg
flask.
