1.5 Discussion
Bivalves are common to many intertidal and coastal habitats, and are ecologically and economically the best-known and studied benthic suspensionfeeding group (Dame 1996). These macrobenthic invertebrates are common
to tidal waters with relatively high phytoplankton production or suspended
organic material loading. There are numerous systems (Table 1.3) where
oysters and mussels actually or potentially dominate ecosystem processes,
but, in many cases, their dominance is related to intensive aquaculture. In
