One major conclusion of the Europipe project is that there is a strong need for an
improved understanding of the interrelationships between technology, business, politics and the environment and that this understanding has to be introduced in project
planning and management. This means that concepts of integrated assessment (see
Van Asselt et al. 1996) should be further developed and implemented, including open
discussions with all parties involved in very early planning stages.

Environmental Impact Assessment
Since a few years ago Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have become an integral part of approval procedures for large-scale constructions in most European coun-
