The Environmental Protection Plan
The Wadden Sea National Park was established to protect a wetland of extreme environmental importance and vulnerability. Hence, very stringent environmental requirements have been set by the competent authorities. The Europipe project has received
much attention from politicians, authorities, environmental groups, local communities, and the public in general. As a result, environmental issues were identified as being of primary importance for project approval.
Within this setting a detailed and systematic environmental management approach
was evidently required to facilitate the smooth running of the project. With the aim of
ensuring a high level of environmental performance, Statoil (as operator of a group of
companies) implemented an Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) which accompanied every stage of planning, construction and operation. In this way environmental
