while a more extended sampling takes place in the autumn. The samples are analysed
for the occurrence of species, number and biomass. Samples of deep-water fauna are
collected annually in April/May at 17 stations with a view to determining biomass, number and size distribution. Common mussel is sampled annually in October/November.
Coverage is assessed and biomass, number and size distribution determined. The content of heavy metals in mussels at ten stations is also determined.
The vegetation progranIffie includes monitoring and control of the incidence of tassel pondweed (Ruppia), eellgrass (Zostera) and sea tangle (Laminaria). The programme
for tassel pond weed and eelgrass is carried out once a year in AugusUSeptember and
includes aerial photography of the distribution of the vegetation along the coast out to
the 6-m-depth contour line. In addition, analyses are made of the distribution and
biomass. The monitoring of sea tangle takes place at six: localities in AugusUSeptember
using photography and surveying.

Fish
The cruises involve surveying the occurrence of herring by means of echo sounding
along an extensive system of survey lines throughout the 0resund. The surveys are
further supplemented by fishing to establish the occurrence of Rugen herring, and the
North Sea herring which has the northern 0resund as the furthest reach of its area of
distribution. At Drogden close to the alignment of the fixed link, a stationary sonar
system for registering migrating herring shoals was being run in 1996. Echoes were
found during the period which presumably represent migrating fish. Proper verification of the echoes with simultaneous fishing is planned.
70.5.8.4
Birds
The bird monitoring programme emphasizes monitoring of the breeding eider population at Saltholm and monitoring of moulting waterfowl (greylag geese and mute swan).
More extensive monitoring is performed for occurrence of stageing migrants and wintering waterfowl, mainly tufted duck (National Environmental Research Institute 1994).
70.5.8.5
Bathing Water Quality
A supplementary bathing water programme is being carried out throughout the whole
year at the Danish beaches close to the alignment by agreement with the local authorities. On the Swedish side, supplementary bathing water studies were carried out in July
and August 1996 by agreement with the municipalities.
70.5.8.6
Coastal Morphology
A total of 65 profIles at right angles to the coast were surveyed on the Danish and Swedish sides in 1996. Thirty of the profIles are located on the coast along Copenhagen,
