Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
of the sediments by waves and bottom currents which velocities can reach critical values in this
region.
The concentration of the 137Cs in the sediments has quite good agreement with the bottom
topography of the Laptev Sea and water circulation which determine the location of errosion
and deposition zones.
The ice radioactivity is a topic for further investigations and discussions. According to
measurements, the concentration of 137Cs in the ice of the Chukchi Sea was equal to about 1
Bq/m3, i.e. of the same level as the concentration of 137Cs in water. Also, according to analysis
of soil particles at the bottom surface of the ice, values of 4.9-5.6 Bq/kg dry weight were
obtained (at maximum values up to 73 Bq/kg dry weight) (Meese et a!., 1995). Pavlov and
Stanovoy (1996) roughly estimated the possible export of the radionuclides by drifting ice from
the Kara Sea into the Arctic Basin.
There are not enough data of the concentration of anthropogenic radionuclides in the Laptev
Sea to obtain some conclusions about possible sources and temporal variability of the
radionuclide distribution. It is necessary to continue the field observations and modeling
investigations in this problem.
