Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
Similar results were obtained from the study of the sections in the southern part of the White
Sea (Boyarskaya et aI., 1986). Marine environments appeared in the inner part of the Onega
Bay 9-8 Ka (Boreal time). Since the end of the Boreal time and during the whole Atlantic period
(8-5 Ka) sea level position either coincided with the present one or was slightly higher. Sea
level reached its maximum during the Subboreal. Transgression took place against the
background of atmospheric humidity growth and average annual temperature rise manifested by
succession of floral assemblages.
So, it was found out that Holocene paleogeographical events in the Eastern Arctic seas
("marine optimum") and on the adjacent land ("climatic optimum") were diachronous, while
those in the Western Arctic were synchronous.
Conclusions
1 Five ecological diatom zones were established on the basis of the changes in relative
abundance of diatom valves, ecological and biogeographical composition of diatom
assemblages.
2 These diatom ecological zones reflecting the main stages of paleoceanological evolution of
the Arctic Seas during the Holocene may be used as stratigraphical markers for subdivision
of the sequences.
3 The Ecozone III serves as the reference one for subdivision of the Holocene sediments of
the Arctic shelf. Its diatom assemblages reflect the most favourable hydro biological
conditions for the arctic phytocoenoses evolution ("hydrobiological or marine optimum").
Age estimations for the Chukchi Sea are 6.5-2.7 Ka, for the East Siberian Sea - 5.0-2.5
Ka, for the Barents Sea - 5.7-3.7 Ka.
4 The main Holocene paleogeographical events in the Eastern Arctic seas ("marine optimum")
and on the ajacent land ("climatic optimum") were diachronous, while those in the Western
Arctic were synchronous.
