Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
At present, very few information is received on the high-frequency internal gravity waves in
the Siberian Shelf Seas. Special experiments here were not carry out but there are only
simultaneous observations. For example, temperature and salinity fluctuations with periods
several minutes in the seasonal pycnocline layer were recorded in the coastal points of the
Laptev and Kara Seas during the Russian-Swedish Expedition "Tundra Ecology-94". These
fluctuations were most intensive in the north of the Baidaratskaya Gulf where in the seasonal
pycnocline there were recorded very intensive variations reaching more 5°C and 2 in salinity.
Temperature and salinity fluctuations in the pycnocline have well-pronounced non-linear wave
structure. Period of most intencive fluctuations was equal to 10-12 minutes. These fluctuations
were identified as non-linear gravity waves (Zakharchuk and Presniakova, 1997).
This paper describes an observations of high-frequency internal gravity waves in the seasonal
pycnocline on the north of the Laptev Sea.

carried out. E - oceanographic section. 1 - shaded area is a location of the bands of the ice brash near of the ice
edge revealed by radio-location photo.
Data analysis and results
During the summer 1995 cruise ARK XIII of research vessel Polarstern, small-scale
fluctuations of temperature, salinity and currents were recorded in the north parth of the Laptev
Sea (Figure 1). Temperature and salinity at fixed depth were measured using Seabird SBE-19
