LL4

birch-NAP zone (interstadial character)
LL5
745-710
NAP-birch zone (stadial character)
LL6
710-650
birch zone (beginning of a period with interglacial character)
LL7
650-590
alder-birch zone (climatic optimum)
LL8
590-350
birch-alder-NAP zone (AP values above 50%)
LL9
350-0
NAP-birch-alder zone (AP values below 50%)
In the lower part of core PG1228 from Levinson-Lessing Lake two PAZs of interstadial
character (LLA and LLC) are incised in PAZs of stadial character (LL!, LLB, and LLD). The
core PG 1111 from Lama Lake did not penetrate this succession. It probably represents the
upper part of the Middle Weichselian. An unstable climate with several rapid temperature rises
is recorded in the GRIP ice core from Greenland for the period 23 - 58 ka BP (Daansgard et aI.,
1993). These interstadials include the most recent prominent Middle Weichselian thermomer
recorded in central Europe, the Denekamp Interstadial, which was dated to 32 - 28 ka BP
