Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
Figure 5: Distribution of clinopyroxene (TPD = Transpolar Drift System; BG = Beaufort Gyre).
Surface sediments from east Siberian rivers, the Laptev Sea shelf, the central Arctic Ocean and
adjacent shelf areas
Distribution of amphibole
High amounts of amphibole were found in the East Siberian Sea as well as in the eastern Laptev
Sea, with values >30 %, decreasing to the west and to the north. In the rivers draining into the
Laptev Sea, the highest contents occur in the Lena delta sediments (22 %). The amphibole
distribution in the central Arctic Ocean sediments generally show values between 10-20 %
(Figure 4).
Distribution of clinopyroxene
The distribution of clinopyroxene displays its highest values in the western Laptev Sea. The
maximum values seem to be related to the Khatanga outflow, where river sediments contain 27
% clinopyroxene. Other potential source areas (Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, East Siberian Sea)
