Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
calculations indicate that riverine POM is formed mainly from detrital organic material. This is
in general agreement with the small amount of total phytoplankton biomass in the Lena (Cauwet
and Sidorov, 1996; Sorokin and Sorokin, 1996). However, in the Lena delta, at total SPM
concentrations < 10 mg/l, the autochthonous endmember becomes more important.
Accordingly, higher amounts of phytoplankton biomass have been observed in the delta
(Sorokin and Sorokin, 1996).
Although the data base of the TOC, POC, and DOC export of the Siberian rivers is still very
limited, existing data indicate the significance of Siberian river runoff for the Laptev Sea.

The authors wish to thank A. M. Alabyan, V. N. Korotaev, and A. A. Zaitsev for organizing
the "Lena 94" and "LenalYana 95" expeditions and A. W. Ufimzev, who arranged most of the
"Khatanga 96" expedition. Special thanks to the captains and crew members of RV "Prof.
Makkaveev", "Sarya 9", and RV "Lotsman". L. Schonicke and M. Stapke are gratefully
acknowledged for supporting the analytical work. The comments of U. Wand, H. Oberhansli,
of the reviewer M. E. Bottcher, and of one anonymous reviewer helped to improve the
manuscript. This study is funded by the German Ministry of Education, Science, Research and
Technology (BMBF) within the "Verbundvorhaben System Laptev See". This is publication
No 1357 of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research.
