Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
Figure 1: Location of coastal and island observation stations in the Laptev Sea.
Data
The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) carried out regular hydrological and
meteorological studies of the Laptev Sea and its rivers for more than 50 years. The
hydrographic surveys of the ice-free area of the Laptev Sea from drifting ice were made
practically on an annual basis in summer and in some years in the wintertime. At 16 stations
along the coast and the islands of the Laptev Sea were carried out observations of sea level and
some other oceanographic characteristics (Figure 1).
We employed the following data in this work:
• atmospheric pressure fields over the Laptev Sea area from 1960 to 1980 with a 4 h time
interval.
• ice conditions - monthly means from data in the Arctic Ocean Atlas (1980), Romanov
(1992), Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice 1978 - 1987 (1992).
• daily discharges of the main rivers (Khatanga, Anabar, Olenek and Yana) emptying into the
Laptev Sea.
• daily observations of sea level at 16 coastal and island observation stations.
• daily observations of water temperature and salinity in the surface layer at island and coastal
stations.
