Construction of the seawall has brought about a widening of the beach, in the
western part, of 100 to 120 m (328 to 390 ft), and a loss of 20 m (65.6 ft) in the
east of Mohammedia Beach. Monika Beach remains unaffected. But wave effects,
under the new wave climate, are posing problems for petroleum facilities.
Another extension of the 2,700 m (1,684 mi) long seawall is proposed : some 600
m (1,854 ft) are to be added. Modelling shows that this will result in severe beach
modifications : near the old port (west) a widening of 100 m (328 ft), shortening
by 200 to 300 m (656 to 927 fi) at the eastern end of Mohammedia Beach,
accretion on Monika beach (west) and a loss of 10 m (32.8 ft) width on the right
of the development which will be placed in extreme jeopardy.
As a remedy, a 'haixed-approach" has been suggested : building of from one to
three groins on Mohammedia Beach and artificial nourishment, using sand or
crushed limestone, (with a groin field and/or breakwaters) at Monika.
3 Beach Nourishment as Coastal Protection
Appropriate coastal protection solutions are provided by a durable defense system
and modifying the beach material itself.
While it is generally thought that the oldest beach nourishment operation took
place on the U.S. Pacific coast, and the first one in Europe near Cannes (France),
a claim to that fame is laid by Turkey where a white beach on Sedir Island 03ay
of GOkova) would have been built up on the orders of Marc-Anthony as a gift to
Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, who had oolithic sand brought from Egypt. The
beach is eroding because.., collectors are gathering the oolithes !
3.1
Principles of Beach Nourishment
With the more extensive knowledge of coastal dynamics and the availability of
physical and complex mathematical models morphological processes and
modifications can be predicted to a considerable extent. Additionally, technical
advances in dredging equipment (trailing splithull type, hopper-suction dredgers
and sea-going cutter dredgers) provide new and more economical possibilities for
beach restoration.
