IV. Retreating Shorelines
209
The low-cost of floating breakwaters and their suitability where water level
differences are great or bottom conditions poor, have made them attractive waveenergy dissipaters when funds are limited. Little energy is reflected 17. They were
used, e.g., along England's southeast coast.
Interestingly a painting by John Constable titled "Floating breakwaters at
Brighton" shows open breakwaters installed years ago. It hangs in Brighton's Art
Gallery.
The secondary role, as wave energy dissipaters of certain structures whose
function is energy production has been praised. At the forefront of these are
several wave energy conversion systems : not only do such devices "absorb" wave
energy to convert it in electrical or mechanical power, they also fulfill the
auxiliary role of de facto breakwater.
Segmented breakwaters are discussed later under section 3.
Another device to attenuate the impact of wave energy is the "surgebreaker", a
proprietary trademark; it is a modular, previous sill device which apparently
favored sand accretion, both seawards and landward. Try-outs were made on the
U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico along the shore of Basin Bayou State Recreation
Area, in Walton County, Florida. Enrichment was also monitored updrift and
downdrift of the surgebreaker. However, the steel-fiber reinforced concrete
artificial reef, had, as do similar systems, no slowing effect upon bottom and
beach erosion in areas at short distances from the reel q 7a.

Sea Walls
The sea-wall is a structure separating land and water areas while a bulkhead is
placed on a bank or bluff to halt land sliding and protect an inland area against
wave action. Venetian rnurazzi belong to this type.
