Structures
2.1.1
Groins
Groins (groynes), short, squat structures, jutting out to sea, are built to reduce the
longshore sediment transport in a certain beach area and capture passing sand
(fig. 6 and 7, 8 and 9). If not well designed (length, height) they can cause at the
leeside severe erosion, extending over several kilometers along the coastline.
The latter, in turn, bring about the need for an elongation of the defense s3,stem
over more and more coastline (cf. Belgium, The Netherlands) (photo 2).
The term groin (or groyne) is usually applied to fingerlike structures placed
perpendicularly to the shoreline ; groins are commonly built as a field along an
eroding coast (fig. 16).
