Industrial fisheries are not unique factor in overexploiting natural resources in the
Costa Brava, other important species such as selfish, sea-baits, sea-urchins, actinias, or
littoral fishes today suffer overexploitation due to direct collection (lucrative or not)
or sports fishing; it is almost impossible to carry out a compilation of such kind of
catches. These kinds of highly seasonal exploitation also have importance in modifying habitats and in alter coastal ecosystems. Studies conducted in the Marine Reserve
of the Medes Islands (Zabala et al., unpublished), in which a protected zone was com-
