complished by managing the coastal area as a single unit. To accomplish its purposes,
ICZM in India requires several national actions including the following:
• A policy commitment to support coastal resources management and environmental conservation;
• Achieving an understanding on resources and environmental objectives among the
various coastal stakeholders;
• Establishment of agencies for coordination of coastal affairs;
• Initiation of a system for review of development projects, including environmental
assessment;
• Accumulation of technical information;
• Design and development of effective planning and management programmes (Planning Commission Government of Tamilnadu 1994).
