management of irrigation systems;
fann irrigation management;
use of RS in hydrological models;
land cover mapping;
assessment of flood damage and flood modelling;
detection and assessment of water logging and of salinity.
Applications may be grouped using an even simpler system of categories, based on
the specialities emerged during 25 years of earth observation from space:
1. High resolution mapping of irrigated lands
2. Crop water requirements
3. Crop water stress
4. Detection of saline areas
5. Catchment hydrology
6. Irrigation management
17.2 General Approach
17.2.1 Applications versus Observables and Algorithms
Most applications listed above are typically based on a combination of observations (=what we really measure), algorithms (=how do we manipulate measurements) and a-priori lmowledge (=which constraints can we place on the solutions).
In some cases specific experience is necessary to retrieve the required information
from the image data. To give a concise overview of the techniques used a crossreference table has been prepared (Table 17.1).
17.2.2 Theory and conceptual approach
The remote sensing observables listed in the column headings (Table 17.1) relate
to the following radiation-object interactions:
reflection of solar radiance
thermal emission (thermal infrared and microwave region)
scattering of emission of microwave signals
These interaction processes have been described in Chap. 2 of this book and no
additional material on theoretical aspects is presented here.
