4) VEWmoduler allows the user to create new science modules from biological
primitive equations.
I plan to make available the Virtual Ecology Workbench for general use. The
VEWdata plus the Azores Virtual Plankton Ecosystem in a set of 5 CD-ROMs will
be released in 2001. The other levels are currently being used operationally in the
Oceanography Laboratory at Imperial College. They will be released after further
engineering and testing. Consult my website for information on availability http://
www.huxley.ic.ac.uk/OceansL.

Fig. 18.11 The VEWdata Graphical User Interface showing the trajectories of zooplankton
3601 and 4200 from 3 rd to 9 th July in the Azores virtual plankton ecosystem. Note that these
are the same zooplankton as in Fig. 18.3c. We see here that the heavier zooplankton (3601)
switch to foraging in the mixed layer on the sth July, while the lighter zooplankton (4200)
continues to forage each night in the deep chlorophyll maximum (30 metres deep) until the
8th July. Note also the heavier zooplankton swim faster (slope of trajectory during diumal
descent and ascent) and that they get deeper at noon.
