LEARNING TO BE AN OCEANOGRAPHER
I started my science career fairly conventionally by completing a Ph.D. in High
Energy Physics. My subject matter related to tiny particles so exotic they do not
occur naturally in the centre of the sun. By 1968 I was bored, and ready to jump. I
applied successfully for an oceanography job advertised by an Australian research
J. S. Godfrey, retired in Tasmania.
