~ Inclusion of existing climatic stations, representative for typical terrestrial
ecosystems in each country;
~ Inclusion of stations for comparative data from Mediterranean regions
continental regions, ocean regions or arid climatic regions, especially in boarder
zones;
~ Development of a common methodology in all stations for obtaining of
comparable data;
~ Introduction of modern facilities and equipment for coordinated delivery of data
and comparative information at a small number but important anchor stations
for each country;
~ Technological support in order to receive uniform directives in all countries for
the use with the equipment of the stations;
~ Inclusion of representative watershed basins for the study of the integral impact,
as well as climatic and the anthropogenic influence.
3 The role of the Bulgarian Forest Research Institute
The Forest Research Institute (FRI) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS),
Sofia, has a longstanding tradition in the study of representative ecosystems and
watersheds in Bulgaria since 1961. The information from the ecological stations
established for the purpose could be useful, both for revealing climatic changes and
their impact on the water balance of the country; the vulnerability of the basic
forests, for the study of vegetation and wildlife under the impact of climatic stress.
FRI-BAS would therefor play an important role among the participating institutes
in a multinational Regional Network.
The existing Bulgarian network inter alia includes representative forests of the
following stands: Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abieslL., Karsten, Abies alba. Mill, Pinus
mugo Mill, Quercus cerris L.,Fagus sylvatica L..
The necessary infrastructure for the carrying out the investigations, the necessary
buildings, technical facility and research staff is available, however contemporary
equipment will have to be supplied.
It is necessary to adopt realistic projects for building up the Anchor stations in
each of the countries. In Bulgaria at this state at least the following two stations
could be implemented at the first stage: Vassil Serafimov and Govedartsi.
