Consequently, national and sub-regional policies in the Mediterranean Region
are not sufficiently appropriate and consistent.
4 Objective of the Project
The purpose of the project is to improve the capacity of national administrations of
Mediterranean countries to effectively program measures and policies to combat
desertification and the effects of drought.
This aim will be pursued by reinforcing the communication amongst them,
facilitating the exchange of information and establishing a common information
system to monitor the physical and socia-economic conditions of areas at risk, assess
the extent, severity and the trend of land degradation.
5 Expected Results
The expected results are of institutional and technical nature.
The institutional expected results are as follows:
• Information is circulated and exchanged between the relevant institutions at
regional level;
• Interactions between scientific institutions and decision-makers are recognized
at the national level;
Available information is suitable for planning purposes at the national level;
New information technologies are diffused in national services.
The technical expected results are as follows:
~ Standards and procedures for:
vulnerability mapping,
impact indicators,
databases,
~ are agreed for the Mediterranean area;
~ Homogeneous and standardized data are available;
~ Methodologies to produce information suitable for planning and monitoring
purposes are fully available, in particular for:
crossing data of different types from different sources;
managing of analysis at different scales;
producing information in useful format.
~ The common information system on desertification is set up and operational.
