shows the maximum in the western part of Greece, whereas the minimum is located
in central and northern Greece.
A second maximum with values up to 300mm can be found over eastern Aegean
Greek Islands. In spring the maximum is located in north-west of the country (more
than 220mm) whereas the minimum is found in meridional Aegean Sea (less than
90mm). During summer there is an almost zonal distribution of precipitation, with the
maximum being located in the north part of Greece (-I OOmm). The autumn
distribution of precipitation resembles the annual one, where the maximum (more
than 350mm) is located in west and the minimum (-II Omm) in Cyclades.
The geographical distribution of the number of rainy days per year reveals a
maximum over Ionian Sea that is much more than 100 days per year (Fig. 4). The
lowest values are observed along the Aegean Sea where average is 70 wet days per
year. The seasonal spatial distribution of wet-days is summarised in Fig. 5, where the
winter maxima and summer minima are clearly depicted.
