Near East are divided into 6 to 8 regions which represent between 62 and 67% of
explained variance. The general features of the regional distribution of the
precipitation are common to the year and the three rainy seasons, from autumn to
spring. Two regions extending in latitude over the area concern its western and
eastern limits, the Atlantic region and the East Mediterranean. In-between, the
Mediterranean is divided between north and south coasts, each subdivided into
several regions (Figure 1).
4 Regional Trends
All the trends of the regional precipitation (the scores of the RPCA factors) are non
significant according to Spearman and Kendall tests except for the annual evolution
in Greece. But some trends of the moving averages are significant for the year or one
or two seasons in some regions (Table 1 and Figure 2).
5 Comparison Between Regional and Local Trends
Annual regional and local (station) trends have been compared to determine the
interest of regional trends calculated from scores obtained by RPCA. In regions
where score trends are non significant the following different possibilities can occur:
