Long Term Variability of Sea Level and Atmospheric Pressure in the Mediterranean Region 157
of India and the Sahel, defined by July-September rainfall, with different
characteristics for the western and eastern Mediterranean basins. In the eastern
basin AP is anticorrelated with both precipitation regimes in July-September, while
in the western basin it is highest positively correlated in September-November, that
is later than the main rainfall period. SL is highest anticorrelated with both
precipitation regimes in September-November all over the basin. This means that,
while in the western basin the teleconnection can be considered indirect, being
mediated by the IB, in the eastern basin SL may exhibit a delayed response to the
summer circulation via baroclinic processes, such as heat storage.
Teleconnections with India and Sahel precipitation regimes are also found with
the Mediterranean Pressure Index (MPI, Raicich et ai., 200 I), that is an East-West
pressure difference related to the geostrophic component of the Etesian wind regime,
typically affecting the Mediterranean in summer.
