of the results. Extreme rainfall events seem to increase in some locations but to
decrease in other locations sometimes very close from the former locations, e.g. case
of Tunisia. There is a need to consider other kind of indices to be able to make
conclusion at regional level like indices which characterize regional precipitation
features instead of local precipitation climate.
6 Conclusion
This workshop was an opportunity to reach all the initial objectives:
an inventory of 23 national daily data in Africa.
23 national daily data homogenized and quality controlled.
23 national detection studies based on a set of indices listed in appendix
A were performed and papers produced and presented.
A regional set of cumulative indices over Africa.
A validated software ready to be circulated to the remaining African
countries
Taking into account the short period (5 days) and achievement of all objectives the
concept of tri-steps workshop is demonstrated to be efficient in Africa.
Most of the selected indices seem to be very relevant for temperature and give a
regional overview of climate change however for precipitation the same indices seem
to be highly dependent on location and though for regional studies there is a need
to consider other indices more relevant to regional level.
The workshop was also an occasion to validate a new concept of exchange of
data through "Elaborated data" rather than "Raw data". Indeed, all participants
show their agreement to exchange indices rather than raw data due to many
constraints, mainly: national sovereignty and commercialization. It was also a good
opportunity to strengthen the collaboration between the African national
meteorological services. The usefulness of such kind of workshops have been
expressed by all the participants and we therefore recommend that the ClimDex
software, used in the workshop for computing some climate indices, and its manual
should be sent to the others African countries that were enable to attend this
workshop.
