8.3.2 Quality and Analytical Properties
The basic approach to quality defines this term as a collection of characteristics
or properties. As a result, the analytical properties described in Chap. 2 are
directly related to analytical quality and allow its different facets to be characterized.
As shown in Figs. 2.1 and 8.6, quality of analytical results materializes in the
two capital analytical properties, viz. accuracy (Sect. 2.4.1) and representativeness (Sect. 2.4.2), which must inevitably be integrated (see Fig. 2.7).
Quality of the analytical process (Figs. 2.1 and 8.6) materializes in two types
of analytical properties, viz. basic (Sect. 2.5) and accessory (Sect. 2.6). Basic analytical properties (precision, sensitivity and proper sampling) provide support
for capital analytical properties; on the other hand, accessory properties (expeditiousness, cost-effectiveness and personnel safety and comfort) characterize laboratory productivity.
The foundation, contradictory and complementary hierarchical relationships
among analytical properties described in Sect. 2.7 are all essential aspects of
analytical quality. Specially relevant are contradictory relationships (Sect. 2.7.3)
as they give rise to the quality compromises that must be adopted in tackling the
analytical problem. Figure 2.16 places analytical properties on two tetrahedra
sharing a common vertex. Increasing quality in the results inevitably entails
reducing the levels of the complementary properties of the CMP concerned
- which will be slower and more expensive to implement, for example. If
complementary properties are to be favoured, quality in the results cannot be
expected to be too high.
