6 Quantitative Aspects of Analytical Chemistry
I Seminar 6.4
Detailed Comparison of CMPs for the Determination of the Same
Analyte
(I) Determination of lead in environmental samples
• Learning objective
As part of an integral proposal of student practices based on the use of various
instrumental techniques for the same type of sample (environmental) and
analyte (lead), compare the different analytical procedures for quantifying
traces of the pollutant.
• Literature
• "Lab Lead: Teaching Instrumentation with One Analyte", A. Fitch, Y. Wang,
S. Mellican and S. Madra, Anal. Chern., 1996,727 A.
• Handbooks describing methods based on the use of various instruments
dealt with in the previous paper.
• Procedure
(1) Carefully read the recommended paper and identify CMPs.
(2) Find the descriptions of the CMPs in handbooks.
(3) Assess the results. Examine the influence of the "client" and other factors.
• Discussion
• Discuss the environmental impact oflead (analytical problem).
• Critically compare the quantitation techniques used in Analytical
Chemistry.
• The role of the "client" in the laboratory: discussing the results.
• Comment on the proposed integral learning approach.
Seminar 6.5
Detailed Comparison of CMPs for the Determination of the Same
Analyte
(II) Determination of organochlorine pesticides in various matrices
• Learning objective
To know the wide variety of available analytical approaches to the determination of each analyte, as well as their varying suitability to sample types,
analyte concentrations, instrumental techniques, standards and quality compromises.
• Literature
Handbooks and monographs describing determinations of organochlorine
pesticides. The CMPs selected should involve classical techniques, photometries, fluorimetries, chromatographies, electro analytical techniques, etc.
