Appendix D Computer Programs ApD
D.2.11 Program D.82: Steady Release of Substance in Uniform
Flow
• Theoretical background: see Section 8.3.4.
• Input data:
rate of mass release [kg/s],
coefficients of vertical and horizontal diffusion K z [m 2 /s],
current velocity U [m/s],
maximum water depth for vertical cross-sections h [m],
distances of cross-sections (4 points) from point of release and concentration isolines (up to 4 levels).
• Output: results are presented on three graphs. On the first graph, plume
cross-sections (normal to flow directions) are given. On the vertical axis,
the concentration normalized to the value of concentration at the centre
line at distance x = Xl is given. The horizontal axis is normalized with
respect to the distance Ymax = 30".
The second graph illustrates vertical profiles of concentration at the four
distances and at the centre axis of the plume. The concentration values
are normalized against concentration at cross-section X = Xl, with Y = O.
On the third graph, four isolines of concentration are given. The levels
of concentration can be selected as arbitrary, under the condition that
they are smaller than the maximum concentration which is shown in the
plane view form.
The cross flow axis is normalized against the maximum width of the CI
concentration isoline, and the along flow axis shows the distance from the
release point.
D.2.12 Program D.83: Simulation of Substance Diffusion by Monte
Carlo Method
• Theoretical background: see Section 8.3.4
• Input data:
number of points for simulation N,
duration of simulation t [s],
time sampling Dt [s] during simulation,
coefficient of horizontal diffusion K [m 2 /s],
current velocity components u and v [m/s].
• Output: graph showing the distribution of N points released at the origin
after time t under the influence of advection and diffusion. Dashed line
shows the current direction and blue point indicates the centre of 'plume'
after time t.
