3.2 Basic standards

In order to illustrate the meaning of the ISO 19111 the tab1e 3.4. provides exampIes for different types of coordinates reference systems.

3.2.5.2 Geodetic codes (ISO/TS 19127)
Within the ISO 19100 family of standards, the Coordinate Reference Systems are
addressed in the ISO 19111 (Spatia1 referencing by coordinates) but they do not
standardise a specific Coordinate Reference System. Therefore, the ISO Technical
Specification ISO/TS 19127 (Geodetic codes and parameters) bridges the gap between the abstract frame of ISO 19111 and practical needs.
Within the geographie information community many references exist defining
geodetic codes and parameters; none of which are in full compliance with the ISO
19111. The ISO/TS 19127 (Geodetic codes and parameters) provides the required
guidance to app1y the ISO 19111 (Spatial referencing by coordinates) in an appropriate manner.
The mechanism in the ISO 19100 fami1y for creating public1y available lists of
codes and parameters is a registry (ISO 19135). The ISO/TS 19127 provides rules
for the creation and the maintenance of registers for geodetic codes and parameters.
In order to promote the use of the ISO 19100 model for coordinate reference, the
ISO/TS 19127 contains a short list ofCoordinate Reference System data and coordinate transformation data that are international in scope, widely used, well-defined,
and unique. These data inc1ude the International Terrestrial Reference System
