3.1.4.2 Functional standards (IS0nR 19120)
From a long-term perspeetive, the standards ofthe ISO 19100 family will beeome
the only internationally agreed foundation for geographie Information Teehnology.
However, while ISO has been developing the standards, other international organizations have already agreed on their geographie data environments. Thus, it is ISO's
objeetive to develop a generie suite of standards that is eapable of integrating existing environments. It is the challenge ofISO 19120 (Funetional standards) to identify
the existing environments and to provide assistanee with the development of profiles.
A funetional standard is an existing geographie information data standard developed speeifieally for the transfer of data between entities in different nations. The efforts oflSOrrR 19120 resulted in areport that eonsiders three funetional standards
that should be harmonised with the ISO 19100 series.
• The Digital Geographie Exchange Standard (DIGEST) is used to support the military digital geographie information requirements amongst NATO nations. The
standard is maintained by the Digital Geographie Information Working Group
(DGIWG).
• The Geographie Data Files (GDF) is used to define and exchange digital road databases with a partieular emphasis on navigation applieations. The ISO/TC204
(Intelligent transport systems) has ereated an International Standard for global
GDF.
• The International Hydrographie Organization (IHO) Transfer Standard S-57 is intended to be used for the exchange of digital hydrographie data between national
hydrographie offices and for distribution to manufaeturers, mariners, and other
data users.
As the ISO 19100 standards beeome available, other funetional standards are
likely to be identified in the future. Therefore, the report is only eonsidered the starting point for a feedback eyc1e between the funetional standards eommunities and the
ISOrrC211 experts and its funetion is to support the maintenanee and future revisions ofthe ISO 19100 standards. It is intended to identify eomponents and elements
that ean be harmonised between both eommunities. This feedback is made available
to ISOrrC211 through amendments to the initial report.
3.2 Basic standards
As stated in ehapter 2, seetion 4 the members of the ISO 19100 family of standards ean be unoffieially eategorized into the groups infrastrueture, basic, imagery,
eatalogue, and implementation standards. The basic standards eomprise the aspeets
of services, spaee, time, georeference, portrayal, encoding, metadata, quality, and
application schema.
