Architectural reference model
The tenn "architecture" is used here in the context of service architecture. The architectural reference model lays out a concept for structuring the great number of
geographic infonnation services involved. The basis for the architectural reference
model is the ISO/lEC Open Systems Environment Reference Model (OSE-RM), described in ISO/IEC TR 14252. This standard completely addresses the services for
Infonnation Technology. The ISO 19101 standard defines an Extended Open Systems Environment (EOSE) Reference Model that includes the specific services for
geomatics. Figure 3.9 provides a complete view of the IT-services and the geographic infonnation services.
Profiles
A profile of a standard defines a sub set of the elements of the standard in order to
meet specific needs and to eventually avoid a heavy overload of functionality. Profiles of the ISO 19100 standards may combine subsets of different standards - ISO
19100 family standards and others. A special case of future profiles are functional
Hans Knoop was born in Magdeburg in the eastern
part of Gennany. He is the fonner Head of the 'Division of Surveying and Cadastral Affairs - Cadastre, GIS, International Cooperation' of the Federal
State of Niedersachsen with 3.500 staff. He is also
Head of the Department of 'Surveying and Geographic Infonnation' of DIN, the Gennan Institute
for Standardisation in Berlin.
Dr. Knoop holds a Diplom-Ingenieur and a Doktor
degree, both of the Technical University of Hannover. With his studies in geodesy and his research
efforts in electronic tacheometry he contributed one
of first developments of computer based surveying
techniques. Later Dr. Knoop became a professor for Cadastral Surveying and
GIS at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Gennany, and an appointed
honorary professor ofWuhan Technical University in China.
Dr. Knoop belongs to the pioneers of international standardisation of GIS. From
the beginning he was a member of CEN/TC287, the European GIS standard isation, and later member of ISO/TC211. His efforts focused on networking the
ISO-standards with the developments of neighbouring subjects such as surveying
(FIG), photogrammetry/remote sensing (ISPRS), and education. He is a member
of the Advisory Group on Strategy and also co-chairs the Advisory Group on
Outreach.
