The Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) (XSL 1999) is intended to contr01
the appearance of XML documents. XSL is a language for expressing stylesheets. A
stylesheet expresses mIes for presenting a class of XML documents. Thus a
stylesheet contains descriptions on how XML elements can be rendered by an XML
browser. XSL views an XML document as a tree and uses a two-stage presentation
process. First, the result tree is constructed from the source tree. Second, the result
tree is interpreted to produce formatted output on display, on paper, in speech or
onto other media.
The Document Object Model (DOM 1998) specification defines a platform- and
language-neutral interface, that allows programs and scripts to dynamically access
and update the content, structure and style of XML documents. The DOM provides a
standard set of objects for representing HTML and XML documents, a standard
model of how these objects can be combined, and a standard interface for accessing
and manipulating them. This means that vendors can support DOM as an interface to
their proprietary XML processors.
The Scalable Vector Graphics language (SVG 2000) is a language for describing
two-dimensional graphics in XML. SVG allows for three types of graphie objects:
vector graphic, images and text. Graphical objects can be grouped, styled, transformed and composed into previously rendered objects. SVG drawings can be interactive and dynamic. Animations can be defined and triggered either declaratively
(i.e., embedding SVG animation elements in SVG content) or via scripting.
