Annex A: Terms and definitions ofthe ISO 19100 standards
235
EXAMPLE
"metre"
NOTE
A data quality value unit is provided only when applicable for a
data quality result.
data transfer
movement of data from one point to another over a medium (lS050 2002)
NOTE
Transfer of information implies transfer of data.
data type
specification of the legal value domain and legal operations a110wed on values in this
domain
EXAMPLE
Integer, Real, Boolean, String, Date, and GM ]oint.
NOTE
A data type is identified by a term, e.g. Integer
NOTE
A data type is identified by a term, e.g. Integer. Values ofthe data
types sha11 be of the specified value domain, e.g. a11 integer numbers between -
65537 and 65536. The set of operations can be +, -, / and * and sha11 have a we11 defined semantic. A data type can be simple or complex. A simple data type defines a
value domain where values are considered atomic in a certain context, e.g. Integer. A
complex data type is a co11ection of data types, which are grouped together. A complex data type may represent an object and can thus have identity.
dataset
identifiable collection of data (lS034 2002)
NOTE
A dataset may be a sma11er grouping of data which, though limited
by some constraint such as spatial extent or feature type, is located physica11y within
a larger dataset. Theoretica11y, a dataset may be as sma11 as a single feature or feature
attribute contained within a larger dataset. A hardcopy map or chart may be considered a dataset.
NOTE
For purposes of data quality evaluation, a dataset may be as sma11
as a single feature or feature attribute contained within a larger dataset.
NOTE
The principles which apply to datasets mayaiso be applied to dataset series and reporting groups.
dataset series
collection of datasets sharing the same product specification (lS047 2003)
datum
parameter or set of parameters that serve as a reference or basis for the calculation of
other parameters (lS043 2003)
NOTE 1
A datum defines the position ofthe origin, the scale, and the orientation of the axes of a coordinate system.
NOTE 2
A datum may be a geodetic datum, a vertical datum or an engineeringdatum.
