5.2 External liaison organizations to ISOITC211
5.2.1 Portrait of all (status July 2003)
The work of standardisation committees relies heavily on the expertise of organizations outside the usual standardisation business. These organizations, known as
"externailiaison members", are assigned to the Technical Committees of ISO or IEC
according to the needs of a specific standards development project.
Even though the externailiaison members of ISO/TC2ll are all international representatives of some kind of geographie information, each are a different type of organization with a different organizational structure. They might be categorized in the
following way:
International organizations, representing
• Government agencies; example are IHO (hydrography) and WMO (weather)
• Scientific subjects; examples are lAG (geodesy) and FIG (surveying)
• Regional interests; examples are JRC (Europe) and PCGIAP (Asia, Pacific)
• Some tasks ofthe United Nations; an example is UNGEGN (geographie names)
