5 Liaison members of ISO/TC211
5.1 Internal liaison members of ISO/TC211
The ISO/TC211 (Geographie information / Geomaties) was founded in 1994 to standardise geographie information. However, various aspeets of geographie information
had been published as ISO, IEC, or ITU standards before the ISO/TC211 was
founded and other relevant standards are being developed while the work of the
ISO/TC2I1 is ongoing. Formal relations with the responsible eommittees, known as
"internal liaisons" have been established in order to align the existing standards and
ongoing aetivities with the work of ISO/TC211.
The number of internal liaisons varies aeeording to the needs of the standardisation work. The following list has been assembled from all Teehnieal Committees and
Subeommittees of ISO and IEC, as well as all study groups of ITU. The groups that
are presently not formal internailiaison members are marked.
In many eases, only a very speeifie W orking Group or Subeommittee of a Teehnieal Committee will develop an internal liaison-relationship to the ISO/TC211. An
example is the ISO/TC82 (Mining). Only the Subeommittee 1 (ISO/TC82 SCI) titIed "Geologieal and Petrographie Symbols" has an internailiaison with ISO/TC211.
The Working Groups and the Subeommittees relevant to geographie information are
titled aeeordingly and plaeed as the first paragraph of eaeh seetion. In the situations
where the names of the Working Groups and Subeommittees do not elearly define
the subjeets that they eover, a list of topies is provided for clarifieation. The other
paragraphs in a seetion point to further W orking Groups or Subeommittees of the
Teehnieal Committee. An example is the ISO/TC204 (Intelligent transport systems)
in whieh the Working Group 5 (Fee and toll eolleetion) (ISO/TC204 WG5) has only
a minor interest in geographie information.
The internailiaison eommittees with ISO/TC211 (Geographie information / Geomaties) are underlined.
As an introduetion a listing of all relevant ISO and IEC TCs and SCs as weil as
the ITU SGs (Study Groups) is given in brief.
